Listening, speaking, reading and writing develop far more independently than people expect β which is why strong readers often stall on listening, and why knowing grammar does not produce fluent speech. Assess each skill on its own and give the weakest one more time.
Word frequency in English is extremely skewed. A few thousand of the most common words cover the majority of everyday text, so at beginner and intermediate levels, knowing high-frequency words precisely beats collecting rare ones. Store collocations and example sentences alongside meanings, or the word stays passive.
Learning science keeps converging on a short list. Spaced repetition lengthens review intervals to strengthen long-term memory. Retrieval practice β recalling before checking β builds far more durable memory than rereading. Shadowing, repeating a native recording almost simultaneously, trains pronunciation and rhythm together.
Choose the test by purpose. TOEIC focuses on business listening and reading and is widely used for hiring in Korea. TOEFL and IELTS assess academic English including speaking and writing for university admission. OPIc and TOEIC Speaking measure spoken ability separately. With any of them, part of the score simply comes from familiarity with the format, so sit several full-length mocks under real conditions.
